Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been making some big announcements and changes to modernize Saudi Arabia. Recently, the country has launched futuristic projects like Neom and even hosted its first swimsuit fashion show.
Now, the Kingdom is gearing up to build the world’s largest dark sky reserves as part of its ambitious regenerative tourism destination project known as the Red Sea Global project.
Located in the northwest region of the kingdom, the coastal area spans 28,000 square kilometers, surrounded by sand dunes and clear waters. It stands out as one of the least light-polluted areas in Saudi Arabia.
“People don’t realise how many stars you can see when you are in a very dark environment,” said Associate Director of lights at the red Sea Global, Andres Bates.

He added that the “idea of people being able to come to this destination and reconnect with the stars is beautiful, and something most don’t get to see in everyday life.”
The current largest dark sky reserve in the world is the Greater Bend area in Texas. The World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness data revealed that more than 80% of the global population lives in areas where light pollution hides the natural view of the night sky.
