Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the Safe City Project in Sheikhupura on Thursday, marking the launch of a broader initiative to transform 18 cities in Punjab into ‘safe cities’ by March.
The first phase began with Sheikhupura, with four more cities set to follow next week. During her visit, Maryam Nawaz inspected the control room and monitoring equipment, including advanced communication tools such as body cams and rugged smartphones.

She was briefed on the installation of 273 surveillance cameras at 52 key locations across the city. The project will facilitate automated e-challans for traffic violations and track air quality. Furthermore, a facial recognition system will help identify criminals, and pink emergency buttons have been placed at 10 sites in Sheikhupura.
The chief minister also announced the provision of free Wi-Fi at 15 locations. Later, she met with assembly members, where the expansion of Sheikhupura-Sargodha Road and a new overhead project were discussed.
In a separate event at Garments City, Maryam Nawaz handed out certificates to women who completed training in garment making as part of her initiative to empower women through skill development. She lauded the programme as the first of its kind in Punjab aimed at uplifting women economically.
