In April, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced a plan to provide free solar systems to 50,000 families in the province.

According to the plan, households consuming up to 100 units of electricity will receive a 1KW solar system, which includes two solar panels, a battery, an inverter, and wires.

It is pertinent to mention that this solar system can power fans, lights, and small motors, and provide up to 16 hours of backup with its lithium-ion battery.

Despite announcing the free solar systems scheme, the Punjab government had not disclosed the application process. However, yesterday, the provincial government revealed a straightforward registration method for eligible families.

Official documents have revealed that the provincial government will cover all expenses for the solar system installations. The project, as per the documents, is expected to cost Rs. 10 billion.

Eligible Households

It is important to note that households involved in electricity theft, meter tampering, or any other fraudulent activities will be ineligible for the scheme. Only those consuming less than 100 units per month will be considered eligible.

How to Apply

Eligible households can send their bill reference number and identity card number to 8800. The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) will receive this information and forward it to the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB). After verifying the data, the PITB will provide the final list to the district administration for solar system installation.

Project Management Unit

According to official documents, the Department of Energy has received approval to establish a project management unit to oversee the implementation of the project.
