The Wildlife Department conducted a raid in the Taunsa area, recovering a rare species of eagle valued at over Rs100 million (Rs10 crore) on the international market.
This operation was part of the Punjab government’s ongoing crackdown on the illegal wildlife trade and smuggling. Acting on a tip-off, Punjab Wildlife officials, in collaboration with the Police, seized the rare eagle and arrested the suspect involved in the smuggling of rare birds overseas.
Wildlife officials reported that the eagle, which is in good health, has an estimated international market value of over $36,000. Plans are in place to release the eagle back into the wild with a tracking device attached.
Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, speaking on behalf of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, praised the Wildlife Department’s efforts. She emphasized the crucial role birds play in maintaining ecological balance. Aurangzeb also highlighted the department’s success in seizing numerous rare animals and birds, many of which have been treated, saved, or transferred to zoos.
