The Punjab government’s claims of austerity have been called into question following revelations from the office of the Ombudsperson, where high-end devices like the iPhone 15 Pro Max and five Samsung S24 Ultra phones were purchased for government officials.

This has sparked outrage, particularly as citizens grapple with record-high bills amid severe inflation.

Social media posts expressing dissatisfaction reveal a receipt totaling Rs7,687,350 from a mobile store in Lahore for these luxury phones. Abdul Basit Khan, media advisor at the Ombudsperson’s office in Punjab, confirmed the purchases, admitting that the phones were indeed bought.

He justified the expenditure by stating that these devices were necessary for officers to manage complex information received through their management information system from overseas. However, he did not elaborate on the specific nature of this “complicated information” requiring such expensive phones.

This revelation has intensified public discontent, with many questioning the government’s commitment to austerity measures in light of the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens.
