Punjab govt to implement ‘one-dish rule’ at weddings

LAHORE: In a move aimed at promoting austerity and discouraging extravagant trends, the Punjab government has mandated strict adherence to the ‘one-dish rule’ at wedding events across the province, as reported by Geo.

The decision was among a series of measures agreed upon during a provincial cabinet session chaired by Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday.

As per the media reports, among the approved initiatives was the reinstatement of free-of-cost medicines for cancer patients, reflecting the government’s commitment to healthcare accessibility.

Additionally, the cabinet greenlit the issuance of Kisan Cards, recommended strategies for wheat procurement, and pledged cash subsidies to small-scale farmers. A digital monitoring system for the prosecutor department’s performance and enhancements to the standards of First Information Reports (FIR) were also approved.

CM Maryam stressed the need for stringent enforcement of the one-dish rule at wedding ceremonies, a longstanding policy aimed at curbing ostentatious displays of wealth. This regulation seeks to alleviate the financial burden on deserving families, who often feel compelled to conform to societal pressures despite facing economic hardships.

The implementation of the one-dish rule has been ongoing in Punjab for several years, with authorities taking punitive actions against violators who flout the law by indulging in lavish spending and extravagant displays, including showering guests with local and foreign currencies.

The move aligns with previous efforts to conserve energy amidst the country’s power crisis. In 2022, the federal cabinet imposed restrictions on wedding functions in Islamabad, banning events after 10 pm to mitigate energy consumption.
