By LAHORE: In a significant move aimed at addressing the alarming rise in rape and child abuse cases, the Punjab Cabinet on Wednesday has given the green light to establish special speedy trial courts dedicated to hearing such cases.
According to media reports, the decision was reached during the fifth session of the provincial cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The reports indicate that the approval paves the way for legislation on speedy trial courts, which is set to be presented to the Punjab Assembly for further approval in the near future.
Furthermore, the Punjab Cabinet endorsed setting the minimum support price of wheat at Rs3,900 per 40 kilograms.

During the meeting, a comprehensive briefing was provided to CM Maryam regarding the amendment of defamation laws and the establishment of special courts. It was emphasised that in defamation cases, the investigation must be concluded within 90 days and the trial within 180 days. Furthermore, defamation notices can now be served via major newspapers, social media platforms, and courier services.
Moreover, the Punjab Cabinet sanctioned amendments to the Punjab Alternate Dispute Resolution Act 2019 and the establishment of the Standing Committee on Legal Affairs, and approved the removal of the chairman of the Drug Court Gujranwala due to allegations of misconduct.
The meeting was attended by provincial ministers, the Chief Secretary, the Inspector General of Police, and other senior officials, who provided detailed briefings to the Chief Minister on various agenda items.
