Punjab approves housing project for low-income families

The Punjab cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, approved several key initiatives and policy changes during its four-hour-long 10th meeting on Tuesday. The meeting covered a heavy agenda of 56 points.

The cabinet approved the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” and “Chief Minister Punjab Kissan Card Program,” aimed at providing housing and support to farmers. It also decided not to extend the allotment of government houses to employees after their retirement.

An increase in allowances for doctors at Basic Health Units, Rural Health Centres, and select Tehsil Headquarters hospitals was approved to incentivize temporary appointments in remote areas. The cabinet also approved the Punjab Sikh Anand Karaj Marriage Registrar Rules 2024, making Punjab the first province to implement the Sikh Marriage Act.

The cabinet agreed to gradually transition rickshaws to eco-friendly alternatives and simplified the process for obtaining motorcycle fitness certificates to combat smog.

The cabinet approved a procedure for providing electric bikes to orphan students, with the chief minister directing the completion of this process. It also granted BS-17 status to librarians and BS-16 status in all departments for those holding master’s degrees.

Approval was given for signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Pakistan Railways for constructing railway crossings in the Jalalpur Irrigation Project. The cabinet also approved the import of exotic embryos to boost meat and milk production, including local embryo production in co-breeding services.

The Punjab Animal Health (Identification and Traceability) Regulations 2024 were also approved.

The cabinet granted approval for the Vice Chancellors Search Committee for the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Lahore and Bahawalpur, alongside the introduction of new disciplines at the Lahore campus.
