ISLAMABAD: Jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party has congratulated Donald Trump after his historic victory in the 2024 US presidential election.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) shared a congratulatory post on its official account on X, tagging President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.

Trump defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris to return to the White House after four years. According to media reports, Trump secured 277 electoral votes, while Kamala Harris garnered 226 votes.

In its official statement on X (formerly Twitter), PTI congratulated Trump and JD Vance on their victory.

“The people have spoken, and their mandate has been respected—something starkly different from Pakistan, where the public’s mandate was blatantly stolen,” the party’s statement read.

Former President and senior PTI leader Arif Alvi wrote a letter of congratulations to Trump, referencing a previous message he had sent in July condemning the assassination attempt on Trump.

In the letter, Alvi emphasized the importance of free and fair elections, stating that the process allowed American citizens to express their will, thereby enabling them to pursue their hopes and dreams under Trump’s leadership.

“We look forward to continued cooperation as democratic nations,” Alvi wrote, adding that Trump’s victory would likely alarm authoritarian leaders around the world.

Opposition leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, also congratulated Trump and Vice President-elect Vance, expressing hope that their administration would help strengthen ties between Pakistan and the United States.

“We hope this new administration will work to deepen the bond between the people of our two nations,” Khan said.

PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari, speaking on behalf of the party and Imran Khan, congratulated Trump and described his victory as a triumph over significant challenges.

“This is a powerful statement from those who felt marginalized, a call for transformative change and economic stability,” Bukhari said.
