LAHORE: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) passed a resolution on Sunday urging the federal government to add former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as a national democratic hero and include his image on currency notes.
The resolution was approved during a seminar on Zulfikar Ali Bhutto reference, entitled “Bhutto Reference and History”, which took place in Lahore.
Moreover, acknowledging the Supreme Court’s recent admission of unfair proceedings leading to Bhutto’s execution, the resolution demanded the federal government by proposing him the title of Quaid-e-Awam” (Leader of the People) and for the prestigious Nishan-e-Pakistan honour be conferred to him.
Additionally, the PPP resolution calls for the establishment of a commemorative monument and the designation of Bhutto’s mausoleum as a national shrine, underlining his enduring significance in Pakistani history.
The resolution further demanded the creation of the “Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Award” to honour democracy activists who have made ultimate sacrifices for their cause.

The Supreme Court, in response to a presidential reference, echoed concerns about the fairness of Bhutto’s trial, highlighting the need for revisiting the controversial verdict.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan’s first elected prime minister, during the regime of General (retired) Ziaul Haq, was sentenced to death for the alleged murder of political rival Nawab Mohammed Ahmed Qasuri.
Despite international appeals for clemency, Bhutto was executed on April 4, 1979, leaving an indelible mark on Pakistan’s political landscape.
