The Power Division has announced a reduction in electricity bills for September, offering consumers relief amid ongoing concerns over high energy costs.
The adjustment will provide up to Rs2.65 per unit in relief, including taxes, as a result of recent fuel price adjustments. In a statement, the Power Division noted that while fuel cost adjustments led to a reduction of Rs2.93 per unit, quarterly adjustments had increased costs by Rs1.74 per unit.
After combining these adjustments, domestic and agricultural consumers using up to 300 units will see a decrease of Rs2.19 per unit, while other consumers will benefit from a Rs2.65 reduction per unit.

This announcement comes as the government faces criticism for soaring electricity tariffs, which have placed a heavy burden on consumers. In response, the government is renegotiating contracts with independent power producers to address the high tariffs, which are among the highest in the region.
The government had previously introduced a Rs50 billion relief package to stabilize power costs, which included a freeze on tariff increases for protected consumers using up to 200 units.
