SIALKOT: On Monday, the Punjab police arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and mother of Usman Dar, Rehana Dar, from Sialkot, as the former ruling party held protest rallies to mark the May 9 anniversary.

According to media reports, Umar Dar confirmed that the police took his mother and other PTI women supporters on the directives of Defence Minister Khawaja Asif.

“My mother gave a protest call for May 9,” Usman said while talking to the media, adding that the police had surrounded Jinnah House in Sialkot since morning.

Meanwhile, District Police Officer (DPO) Hassan Iqbal denied the reports of Rehana’s arrest. “Rehana Dar and Ruba Dar were not arrested. Both women leaders are at their homes,” he added.

This is not the first time that the Dar family hurled allegations at the defence minister. In December last year, Rehana claimed the Punjab police, on the behest of Asif, tortured and manhandled her at her residence in Sialkot.

May 9 was a conspiracy against Army chief Gen Asim Munir: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday condemned the violent acts that took place on May 9. Addressing a cabinet meeting, Shehbaz stated that the events of May 9 were a conspiracy against the country and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir.

Nationwide protests erupted, targeting sensitive state and military installations, following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on May 9, 2023.

The targeted installations included the army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi and the corps commander’s house in Lahore.
