KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced a public holiday in the province today (Friday) to mark the 17th death anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The main function will be held at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, the Bhutto family’s ancestral home, to pay respects to their slain leader, who was assassinated on Dec. 27, 2007, in a gun and suicide attack after addressing an election rally at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi.
The stage is set at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh and people in caravans started pouring in from different parts of the country.
Security has been tightened in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh with police, special force men, and other security men deployed there.
A big pandal was established at the venue where a 60-feet-big stage was built and different welcome camps were set up to help accommodate the party activists and lovers of the Bhuttos.
President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will address the workers and lovers on this occasion.
Benazir Bhutto, the first female prime minister of Pakistan, was assassinated in a tragic attack on December 27, 2007 in Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi.
The Sindh government on December 19 announced a public holiday to observe the 17th death anniversary of the former prime minister Benazir Bhutto Shaheed.
As per the notification, all government offices, autonomous, and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the administrative control of the Sindh Government will remain closed on December 27.
Multiple events will be organised by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) across the country to commemorate her legacy.
