ISLAMABAD The legal battleground surrounding the election of the Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman has shifted to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party challenges the process.

According to media reports, initially, PTI had announced its intention to boycott these elections, labeling them as unconstitutional. The party’s core committee emphasised this stance to the media. The crux of PTI’s argument revolves around the absence of Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rendering the composition of the House of Federation incomplete.

In a move to halt the election process, five PTI senators have lodged a constitutional petition with the IHC. Central to the dispute is the interpretation of constitutional clauses governing Senate representation. PTI underscores the mandate of 96 senators ensuring equitable representation from all provinces, highlighting a shortfall in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the postponement of elections there.

PTI contends that until Senate elections are held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, delaying the election for Senate leadership is imperative to maintain constitutional integrity and uphold the principle of equal representation.
