PTI demands release of political prisoners

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded the release of political prisoners and party workers arrested after the May 9 riots.

Opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan presented written demands to the Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq.

Imran Khan’s party has presented its charter of demands before the government committee in the third round of talks held at the Parliament House.

PTI deamdned two independent commissions of inquiry, both to be headed by the Chief Justice or three judges of the Supreme Court to probe the arrest of Imran Khan and May 9 riots.

PTI leader Omar Ayub, Asad Qaiser, Ali Amin Gandapur, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, and Sahibzada Hamid Raza attended the meeting. From government coalition’s side, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, Rana Sanaullah, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, and Farooq Sattar attended the meeting.

The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur also attended the meeting.

The last two rounds of talks, hosted by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq held on December 27, 2024, and January 2, 2025.

The PTI in the second round of talks had demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26, and the release of all political prisoners, including Imran Khan.

the government side in the meeting had asked the PTI to present their demands in writing for which the committee was seeking a meeting with its incarcerated leader.

On January 12, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur met with party founding chairman Imran Khan at Adiala jail followed by the party negotiators’ visit.

The PTI has set a deadline of January 31, 2025, for the negotiations to reach a “logical conclusion”, although Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, has suggested extending this to February 28.
