The university said no confirmation of individual candidates would be given before a final list was published in early October.
Voting will be held online from October 28 and only Oxford graduates and members of the university’s congregation, including academic staff, are able to vote.
Khan graduated from Oxford in 1975, studying philosophy, politics, and economics. He also served as the chancellor of Bradford University from 2005 to 2014.
The current chancellor is Chris Patten. In February 2024, Patten announced that he would retire from this role at the end of the 2023/2024 academic year, after 21 years.
