Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry lauded Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Priyanka Gandhi, who carried a bag to Indian Parliament that had “Palestine” written on it.
A watermelon, which is seen as a symbol of Palestinian solidarity, was also featured on her bag.
In a post on X, Fawad pointed out that “no Pakistani member of Parliament has demonstrated such courage”.
“What else could we expect from a granddaughter of a towering freedom fighter like Jawaharlal Nehru? Priyanka Gandhi has stood tall amidst pigmies”, Fawad said.
This bold statement made by Priyanka received a lot of crictism from Modi-led government.
What did Priyanka Gandhi say?
Reacting to the criticism, she said, “Who is going to decide what clothes I wear now? Who is going to decide that? That’s typical patriarchy that you decide what women wear also. I don’t subscribe to that. I will wear what I want.”
Holding up the bag, she added, “I have said many times what my beliefs are regarding this. If you look at my Twitter handle all my comments are over there.”
It is pertinent to mention that it is unusual for an Indian politician to speak openly in support of Palestine as the country’s government has good ties with Israel.
However, Priyanka has been raising her voice against the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza since the war broke out in October last year.
She had earlier also slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his government’s “genocidal actions” in Gaza.
