LAHORE: Federal Minister for Planning, Ahsan Iqbal, on Sunday, during a press conference said that the only way for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to secure his release is by proving his innocence through the judicial system.
He said that Khan must clear himself of all charges in court, as no administrative authority can release him without the judicial process.
Ahsan Iqbal strongly criticised PTI’s leadership and their attempts to create unrest in the country. He stated that the government had shown leniency in the past, but such leniency had been misused. He also questioned the motives behind PTI’s calls for protests, warning that any actions aimed at destabilising the country would only harm national stability.
Referring to Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, Ahsan Iqbal also condemned her avoidance of court appearances after securing bail. He raised concerns that these actions could be an attempt to secure an unofficial amnesty, reminiscent of an NRO-like deal.
The minister also addressed the various cases against Imran Khan, particularly the Toshakhana case and the Al-Qadir Trust case, asserting that there is undeniable evidence against him. Iqbal noted that Khan and his legal team had been employing delay tactics in these cases, as they knew that once the trials were completed, the evidence would lead to a conviction.
Additionally, Iqbal expressed his frustration with the PTI’s disruptive protests, including attacks on military installations and disrespect towards national monuments. He stressed that the government had a responsibility to maintain law and order, and the situation had reached a point where strict measures were necessary to protect the public and national security.
Ahsan Iqbal urged Imran Khan to face the legal proceedings and prove his innocence, asserting that the resolution to his situation lies solely in the courtroom.
