WEB DESK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday resigned as president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), two weeks after top party officials urged Nawaz Sharif to assume leadership of the party.
Under Clause 15 of the party constitution, the PML-N has resolved to call a meeting of the central council of the party on May 18 in Lahore, after the resignation of the senior member.
All of the general council members have received notifications about the meeting from PML-N Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal.
On March 13, 2018, Shehbaz emerged victorious from a convention of the party’s General Council to become the next president of the PML-N.
He came before his brother Nawaz, who was subsequently renamed the party’s “leader for life” when the Supreme Court ousted him from office as president.
Meanwhile, last month the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sana Ullah said that senior leaders of the party have urged PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to take over the party’s presidency.

At a news briefing in Lahore on April 26, Sanaullah stated, “We have hope and believe that Nawaz Sharif’s passionate leadership will become more popular among the masses.”
When questioned, he added that Nawaz was given a “Quaid” post following his “forceful” expulsion from the party in 2017.
He went on to say that regardless of whether the story was about resistance or reconciliation, only Nawaz’s would be accepted.
In answer to a query, he stated that the president held the operational position and that the term “Quaid” was established in the party’s constitution out of respect
