The Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, issued a letter to the Chairman Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, regarding the constitution of a Special Parliamentary Committee under Article 175A of the Constitution of Pakistan, on 21 October 2024.

The committee is tasked with nominating one of the three senior-most judges of the Supreme Court for the appointment of the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

As outlined in Article 175A(3A), the committee will comprise 12 members, including 8 from the National Assembly and 4 from the Senate.

The selection of these members will ensure proportional representation from all political parties, as stipulated in clause 3B of the Article.

Each party’s share of representation on the committee will reflect its parliamentary strength, with nominations made by respective parliamentary leaders.

Speaker Sadiq has invited the Chairman Senate to nominate four Senate members for the committee, highlighting that this action is pivotal for the timely functioning of judicial appointments. The nomination process is expected to proceed efficiently to uphold constitutional obligations.
