Cold, dry spell continues across Pakistan

WEBDESK: According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) the weather in most parts of Pakistan is expected to remain cold and dry, with varying conditions in different regions.

Mountainous areas and northeastern Punjab are experiencing severe cold, while southern Punjab and upper Sindh will likely face light to moderate fog.

In Lahore, the sun has appeared, but the weather remains chilly and dry. The current temperature is recorded at 9°C, with no rain expected in the next 24 hours. However, the city has become the second-most polluted city in Pakistan, with an overall air quality index (AQI) of 186. Specific areas like the U.S. Consulate recorded an AQI of 356, Phase 8 DHA at 245, and Johar Town at 230, indicating unhealthy air conditions.

In Karachi, the cold weather persists, with temperatures dropping as low as 7°C. The current temperature is 13°C and is expected to rise to a maximum of 26°C. Humidity levels are at 40%, accompanied by light winds from the north. According to the weather department, the cold in Karachi may ease from January 9 as western winds enter Balochistan. However, a fresh wave of cold weather is predicted to return by January 12. The air quality in Karachi remains hazardous, ranking as the seventh most polluted city globally and third in Pakistan, with particulate matter measured at 184.

Meanwhile, Mansehra and its surrounding areas are witnessing intense cold weather, adding to the challenges of daily life for residents.

The weather department has also predicted light rain with gusty winds in parts of southeastern Punjab and eastern Sindh, offering a slight respite from the cold for these areas.
