ISLAMABAD: Following the backlash on social media, Chairman Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Dr. Raghib Hussain Naeemi clarified the statement, adding that there was a “clerical error” which confused that the use of a virtual private network (VPN) against the Shariah.

During the press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, Dr. Naeemi said that no one has declared the VPNs un-Islamic. “A typing error in our previous statement created a misunderstanding after ‘not’ was omitted from it.”

The clarification came after the Council of Islamic Ideology issued the fatwa (Islamic decree) on November 15 declaring the use of VPNs un-Islamic, which drew much criticism from different quarters.

Stressing CII’s stance, Naeemi said that social media platforms are effective mediums of public expression, however, they should not be used for blasphemy, religious hatred, extremism, and terrorism.

“If the regulations set by the government are being violated, then the use of social media will be un-Islamic,” the CII chairman said.
