SUKKUR: The District and Session Court Sukkur has issued notices to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in connection with the recent Greek boat tragedy.
The court summoned Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar, Mohsin Naqvi, and SSP Sukkur on January 15.
The Additional Sessions Judge (Court-II) issued the notices in a petition filed by a local lawyer.
The petitioner alleged that unemployed Pakistanis illegally left the country due to government negligence. “The government writ has ended as the death of 75 Pakistanis in the boat capsising incident,” it added.
The petitioner has requested the court to register a case against government officials at Rohri police station for negligence.
Earlier on Jan 3, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested a human trafficker who was allegedly involved in a boat capsize-off incident in Greece in 2023, that left more than 250 Pakistanis dead. In June 2023, hundreds of migrants, including 262 Pakistanis, drowned when a boat traveling from Libya capsized and sank in the Greek coastal town of Pylos.
FIA spokesperson Abdul Ghafoor said that the investigating agency arrested an agent involved in human trafficking the Afghan land route.
The accused identified as Afsar Khan arrested from Haripur. He is an Afghan national and is the brother of a “notorious” human trafficking agent, Qari Jan Muhammad.
The FIA spokesperson said that the arrested trafficker was responsible for illegally trafficking Pakistanis via sea from Libya to Europe in 2023.
On Dec. 27, Pakistani authorities arrested a woman along with two other human smugglers allegedly involved in last month’s boat tragedy.
