LAHORE: Students claiming that a girl was raped at a private college in Lahore have no evidence to support their claim, the counsel for the Punjab government told the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday.
Reports of an alleged rape of a college student in Lahore led to massive protests all across the country prompting law enforcement personnel to arrest more than 150 people – most of them students. Police said they had arrested a security guard of the private college for his alleged involvement in the incident.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the rape incident was “fabricated news,” blaming the ousted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and its supporters for “social media disinformation.”
‘No evidence to support claim in Lahore rape case’
Punjab Inspector General of Police (IG) Dr Usman Anwar and Advocate General of Punjab Khalid Ishaq appeared before LHC during the hearing of a petition against the alleged harassment of female students in Punjab’s educational institutions.
The Punjab’s state counsel informed the court that students claiming that the rape happened had no evidence to support their claim following which LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum admonished the police chief for not being able to stop videos about the claims from spreading on social media.
The LHC chief justice then decided that the matter of harassment of students and a separate ongoing case of Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari’s fake videos be clubbed together and heard by a full bench on October 22.
