KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC), directed the police, on Wednesday, to take strict action against beggars at traffic signals across Karachi.
The court issued the orders while hearing a petition regarding the growing presence of beggars, including transgender individuals, women, and children, at major intersections in the city.
According to the court, these individuals inconvenience citizens and harass them, making public spaces uncomfortable. The bench stressed that no beggars should be seen at traffic signals and ordered authorities to ensure their removal.
The court further instructed law enforcement agencies to take immediate steps to address the issue and maintain order on the roads.
The court highlighted that begging at traffic signals has become a growing concern for citizens, with many reporting instances of persistent solicitation and occasional harassment. It also pointed out that some organised groups are behind these activities, exploiting vulnerable individuals.
The ruling comes as part of broader efforts to regulate public spaces and curb unlawful activities in the city. The authorities are now expected to implement strict measures to prevent individuals from engaging in begging at busy intersections.
Police officials have assured that necessary steps will be taken in compliance with the court’s directives.
The Sindh High Court has scheduled a follow-up hearing to review the progress of the implementation. streets and maintain order in the city.
