LAHORE: The Punjab government has unveiled plans to introduce an electric taxi service across the province, aiming to modernise urban transport while addressing pressing environmental challenges.
Inspired by China’s successful electric vehicle (EV) taxi programs, this initiative marks a significant step toward sustainable mobility in Pakistan.
The whole project will be under the supervision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan. The Punjab Transport Department has already started groundwork and discussions with major EV manufacturers.
Notably, the Deewan Group and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) have displayed great interest in joining forces on this groundbreaking project.
Phased implementation starting from Lahore
Then an electric taxi service would be implemented in phases. This will start operating in Lahore and other divisional headquarters. Other major cities will be rolled out in subsequent phases. Taxis would operate 24 hours and 7 days a week, offering the residents an efficient and green mode of transport.
Flexible payments including down payment and installment plans would be provided by the government for encouraging use as well as vehicle ownership for operators. Through this method, potential operators could be encouraged by lowering the barriers to entry while creating arguably great economic growth for the sector itself.
