LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to launch the country’s first e-taxi service to provide eco-friendly and cost-effective alternatives to passengers.

The Punjab government’s e-taxi service will be the first such initiative by any provincial government to change the motor transport worker sector and introduce eco-friendly cars in the province struggling with increasing smog and climate-related issues.

The e-taxi service will also be an alternative to the popular corporate online cabs to ensure safe travel for the public at affordable rates.

The Punjab Transport Department has already started preliminary work on the project on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan will oversee the initiative, which aims to provide affordable electric vehicles and create jobs for the unemployed.

Minister Bilal Akbar Khan has held talks with electric vehicle manufacturers to ensure seamless execution.

Leading companies like Deewan Group and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) have shown interest in collaborating.

In the first phase, the e-taxi service will debut in Lahore and other divisional headquarters. It will later expand to major cities across Punjab.
