The Punjab government intends to celebrate the completion of 100 days of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s tenure by unveiling plans for the construction of five expressways. These expressways are expected to benefit over 20 million residents of the province.

The proposed roads, with a projected cost of Rs175 billion, are set to link over 12 districts of Punjab. It’s estimated that approximately 90,000 vehicles would utilize these expressways on a daily basis.

According to the plan, existing single carriageways, currently in poor condition, will be upgraded to dual carriageways. This change is driven by the alarming rate of accidents, with two to three occurring on each of these roads daily.

The expressway connecting Multan to Vehari would stretch for 93.5 kilometres, while the one linking Faisalabad to Chiniot would span 24 kilometres.

Furthermore, the expressway from Bahawalpur to Changra would cover 42 kilometers, the route from Sahiwal to Summundri would extend for 57.7 kilometers, and the expressway connecting Chichawatni to Layyah would stretch across 199 kilometers.

The journey between Faisalabad and Chiniot, which previously took 45 minutes, will now be completed in just 25 minutes. Similarly, the travel time between Sahiwal and Summundri, previously one and a half hours, will be reduced to 40 minutes with the new expressway.

Moreover, the journey from Chichawatni to Layyah, which previously took four hours, will now take only two hours. Vehicles on these roads will travel at speeds of 100 to 120 kilometres per hour, while urban areas will have a speed limit of 70 kilometres per hour.
