Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has postponed its protest which was going to take place tomorrow (October 15) in Islamabad during SCO summit.
Earlier, many leaders within PTI opposed the idea of protest.
The protest was a part of a broader strategy to demand the release of the party’s detained founder Imran Khan.
PTI protest and SCO
The protest’s timing coincides with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Islamabad, a high-profile international event, which has put additional pressure on both PTI and the government.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman reportedly reached out to PTI leader Asad Qaiser, urging the party to delay the protest in light of the SCO summit.
Maulana expressed concerns about the potential disruption the protest could cause and called for access to be granted to Imran Khan’s personal physician as a gesture of goodwill.
The federal government has deployed more than 10,000 police and paramilitary personnel for the security of about 900 delegates who will arrive in Islamabad for the 23rd SCO summit to be held on Oct 15 and 16.
