Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the UN framework must be followed to deal with climate change during the 29th United Nations Climate Conference (COP 29) in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister said that developing countries need $160 billion by 2030 to deal with the challenge of climate change. The Prime Minister said that Pakistan has faced two catastrophic floods in the recent past. They have not been able to recover from the damage
The Prime Minister further said that today we stand at a critical juncture where the Global Climate Fund needs to be restructured to effectively meet the needs of vulnerable nations.
The Prime Minister added that despite the promises made over the years and repeated assurances, the gap is widening.
Later, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also addressed a ceremony on the protection of glaciers hosted by Tajikistan. On this occasion, he said that the protection of glaciers is necessary to secure water reserves in the future. Glaciers are a major source of drinking water.
The Prime Minister further said that there are 7 thousand of glaciers in Pakistan, 90 per cent of water is obtained from glaciers in Pakistan, the melting of glaciers due to rising temperature is a dangerous sign, survival of humanity is subject to the protection of glaciers.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has met world leaders on the sidelines of the COP29 conference in Azerbaijan.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister met with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on this occasion, the two leaders discussed cooperation between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates on climate change and other issues of mutual interest.
The Prime Minister also met the President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Turkish First Lady, on this occasion they discussed other issues of mutual interest between Pakistan and Türkiye, including cooperation to highlight the problems of environmental pollution and climate change at the global level.
