ISTANBUL: Nine Pakistani students have emerged victorious in their respective committees, winning distinguished awards at Turkiye’s largest public speaking competition, the Istanbul University Model United Nations (MUN), held from July 8 to 11, 2024, according to a statement issued by the Pakistan Consulate General in Istanbul.
The Consul General hosted a group of 13 students who participated in the event held at Istanbul University. This composite team was selected from Bay View Academy, Nixor O’Levels, Karachi Grammar School, and The Cedar School.
The Istanbul University MUN, established in 1453, is one of the largest public speaking competitions in Europe. It encompasses 57 disciplines and includes 10,000 students from over 143 different countries.
The university boasts many notable alumni, including former Turkish President Abdullah Gul and former Turkish Foreign Minister Taran Gunes. This year’s competition hosted over 750 students from more than 17 countries, in addition to participants from Turkey. The Pakistani team consisted of some of the youngest students at the conference, competing against college and university-level students.

The competition involved four days of intense debate across 10 committees. The Consul General of Pakistan in Istanbul, H.E. Nauman Aslam, hosted the Pakistani team and their trainer at the Pakistan Consulate, congratulating them on their achievements.
The Consul General emphasized the importance of positive cultural and educational exchanges between Pakistan and Turkiye to help project Pakistan’s soft image abroad. He also highlighted the need to deepen linkages between educational institutions in both countries and assured that the Pakistan Mission in Turkiye is always ready to assist students in any way it can.
