Joint Secretary Haider Ali Sundrani, from the Senate Secretariat, along with his family, has sought political asylum in a Western European country during his official visit to Geneva for the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from March 23 to 27, 2024.

This action, revealed in a letter from Foreign Secretary Syrus Sajjad Qazi to the National Assembly and Senate Secretariat, has caused national embarrassment and complicated matters for other legal applicants.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has implemented new guidelines for issuing visa and introduction notes.

Moreover, these guidelines require formal requests and an affidavit from the National Assembly or Senate Secretariat, ensuring that applicants do not seek political asylum. The new policy has been approved by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
