WEBDES: The federal government has announced that no new support price will be set for wheat for the 2025-26 harvest.
A letter regarding this decision has been sent to all four provincial governments by the Ministry of National Food Security.
According to the letter, the government has requested proposals from the provinces on ensuring wheat availability based on population needs.
Additionally, suggestions have been sought for dismantling the Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) and activating a third-party company at the national level to enhance food security.
The Ministry said that PASSCO currently reserves 1.2 million metric tons of wheat based on population distribution. However, due to financial irregularities, it is being phased out. This step aims to improve wheat distribution and address financial mismanagement.
