WEB DESK: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a 20 paisa per unit increase in the electricity tariff, which will come into effect for the December 2024 billing cycle.
This adjustment falls under the quarterly mechanism for the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2024-25, according to a notification issued by NEPRA on Thursday.
The hike, which follows a petition by the XWAPDA power distribution companies (DISCOs), was reviewed through a public hearing held by the regulatory body. The increase will impact all consumers, except lifeline users and K-Electric customers.
In comparison to the fourth-quarter adjustments for the fiscal year 2023-24, which stood at Rs1.74 per unit, the first-quarter adjustments for the current fiscal year will be Rs1.54 lower. The tariff increase is aimed at addressing the financial needs of the power sector while continuing to maintain electricity supply across the country.
NEPRA also confirmed that the federal government was duly informed about the tariff adjustment before the notification. This adjustment marks the ongoing adjustments needed to balance the financial health of the power distribution system amid the challenges faced by the energy sector.
