The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about the heightened risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B).
In a statement released on Friday, the NDMA’s National Emergency Operations Centre highlighted the increased danger of flash floods and landslides due to rising temperatures and current weather conditions, with the risk expected to persist until August 12.
Areas identified as particularly vulnerable include Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Astore, Gilgit, Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar, and their surrounding regions. The NDMA has advised residents to avoid traveling to these areas and to stay away from rivers. Those living in high-risk zones have been urged to take special precautions and evacuate to safer locations if necessary.

The NDMA underscored the importance of following local authorities’ instructions and staying updated on weather alerts. To assist the public in receiving timely notifications and guidelines, the NDMA has introduced the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App,” available on Google Play Store and iOS.
In addition, the regulatory authority has directed relevant departments and district administrations to take proactive measures to mitigate potential hazards from glacial bursts.
