What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox, or Mpox, is a virus that can cause flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. Though the infection is typically mild, it can lead to serious complications, particularly in children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
Earlier, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the recent monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency in August 2023, following the identification of a new variant.
Since January 2023, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported more than 27,000 suspect mpox cases and more than 1,300 deaths.
There are two types of mpox, clade I and clade II. Clade I usually causes a higher percentage of people with mpox to get severely sick or die compared to clade II.
As of now, there have been no reported cases of clade I in Pakistan.
