It has been revealed that the personal data of mobile phone users, including CNIC numbers, copies of ID cards, and home addresses, are being sold openly on the internet.
The breach extends beyond basic information, with entire family trees, live locations, call histories, and even WhatsApp data being offered for sale.
Sensitive Data Being Sold on Multiple Websites
Numerous websites and apps on Google are actively involved in the illegal sale of stolen data, with users’ entire family information being made available.
The revelation has raised serious concerns about privacy and data security, especially with critical personal information being sold in the digital black market.
PTA Steps In to Tackle the Crisis
A spokesperson for the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) declared this practice illegal and affirmed that they have already shut down several such websites.
The PTA assured the public that any new websites discovered engaging in this activity are promptly blocked to prevent further violations.
The breach highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of data protection laws in Pakistan, as the exposure of sensitive personal details poses significant risks to citizens’ privacy and security.
Separately earlier, On September 9 the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) retired Major General Hafeezur Rehman announced that the regulator would be blocking all illegal virtual private networks (VPNs) in Pakistan.
