Tensions escalated outside the Lahore High Court on Wednesday as clashes broke out between police officers and lawyers attempting to access the court premises.
According to reports, the clashes commenced around noon when police attempted to block lawyers from entering the court compound.
Television broadcasts depicted scenes of police clad in riot gear engaging in physical altercations with lawyers, wielding batons, deploying water cannons, and launching tear gas shells.
Amidst the chaos, Ehsan Ahmed from Aaj News reported the arrest of at least one lawyer.
The clashes caused disruptions in road traffic near the Lahore High Court, leading to delays on Mall Road and adjacent streets. Lawyers attempted to remove barriers erected by the police.
Lawyers are organizing a significant protest against what they perceive as a fragmentation of the judiciary. Previously, most courts operated from a central location in Lahore known as Awan-e-Adil (House of Justice). However, the judiciary has recently opted to relocate some courts to different areas within the city, such as Model Town and Raiwind.
