Lahore installs its first ‘smog tower’

LAHORE: A smog tower has been installed in Lahore to combat the provincial capital’s poor air quality.

The smog cleaning tower, whose installation has been completed and it will be fully operational from December 21.

The smog-cleaning tower has been installed at Mahmood Booti, Lahore. According to the Punjab Environment Department, the location was selected due to the area’s high levels of air pollution.

This tower has the capability to clean toxic particles from the air and will play a significant role in reducing air pollution in the city.

To fight against the urban air pollution crisis, countries across the world are building smog towers. Some notable large-scale implementations include a 100-meter tower in Xi’an and the 24-meter tower that was constructed in Delhi. These towers incorporate ionisation, HEPA filters, and activated carbon to plastic PM2.5 and purify the air.

Such technologies have also been deployed in South Korea, Poland, the UK, Germany, and even the US, which include local air purifiers in areas with an increased level of pollution.

Smog towers are great at reducing pollutants; however, they are not a stand-alone solution and do so while being part of a greater strategy that includes reduced emissions and different planning for the city.
