The city of lights, Karachi has been ranked as one of the most polluted cities globally, facing an Air Quality Index of 223.

As of 1:30am on Monday, Karachi is in the third place after Lahore and Delhi.

Lahore is on number one with an AQI of 264 while Delhi is on second position with a score of 260.

Pakistan Meteorological Department said that Karachi may experience stronger-than-usual winds, leading to a further drop in temperatures in the upcoming days.

A day earlier, Delhi was on the top list of the most polluted cities in the world.

According to this year’s Life Quality Index Institute report, compiled by the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute, the people of Lahore could have had their lives shortened by 7.5 years due to the poor air they breathe.

To control the smog crisis, the Punjab government closed public places including parks, zoos, playgrounds, joy/play lands, historical places, monuments, and museums in smog-hit districts including Lahore.

Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has described smog as a serious threat and said that it is likely to cause 250,000 premature deaths.

It should be noted that the situation of smog in the capitals of Punjab, Lahore, and Multan, is particularly disturbing.

Earlier this month, Multan ranked as the most polluted city in the world despite restrictions, with an AQI reaching almost 1000.
