ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has taken vigorous action to maintain road safety and discipline, penalising over 800,000 vehicles and motorcycles for traffic violations in 2024, an ITP spokesperson revealed.
Key Enforcement Actions
- 1,019 individuals faced legal action for severe violations, while 300 had licenses and route permits suspended.
- Over 10,000 vehicles and 40,000 motorcycles were impounded for major infractions.
- Fines Issued:
- 100,000 vehicles for illegal parking
- 64,000 for fancy number plates
- 17,000 for tinted windows
- 56,000 motorcyclists for not wearing helmets
- 16,000 for overloading
- 25,000 for lane violations
Driving License & Public Awareness Initiatives
- Issued 64,395 internationally recognised licenses and renewed 62,876 licenses.
- Provided 112,000 learner permits.
- Conducted 893 workshops, benefiting over 600,000 citizens with traffic safety awareness programs.
Enhanced Services
The ITP launched “Facilitation and Education on Wheels”, a Highway One Night Patrol Unit, and a Traffic Response Unit to improve citizen services. Online license renewals and doorstep services for seniors over 70 years old were introduced.
Community and Safety Measures
- Managed over 7,000 major events, including international summits, ensuring smooth traffic flow.
- 30 officers injured during duty in 2024.
- Promoted community policing with “Friends of Police” and “Police Volunteers” badges, flower candy campaigns, and collaborative safety workshops.
CTO Muhammad Sarfraz Virk commended the ITP’s professionalism, highlighting its commitment to public safety despite limited resources, and highlighting the mission to ensure seamless traffic management in Islamabad.
