WEB DESK: In a significant development, the Islamic Republic of Iran has released 28 Pakistani prisoners. The gesture came during the landmark visit of Iranian President Dr Ebrahim Raisi to Pakistan, marking the first such visit by any head of state since the new government assumed power.

The Iranian Embassy in Islamabad confirmed that the sentences of all 28 prisoners have been suspended, and they have been repatriated to Pakistan. President Raisi concluded his three-day visit to Pakistan on Wednesday, which included high-level meetings and symbolic visits.

During his stay, President Raisi engaged in discussions with the leadership of Pakistan, paying homage to the country’s founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and renowned poet Allama Iqbal at their mausoleums. Notable figures bidding farewell to the Iranian President at Karachi airport included Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Governor Kamran Khan Tessori.

Key diplomatic engagements also occurred, with President Raisi meeting with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Syed Asim Munir, President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Among the outcomes of these discussions was a shared commitment to boosting bilateral trade, with both nations aiming to increase trade volume to $10 billion.

President Raisi underscored the historical and religious ties between Iran and Pakistan, expressing a mutual desire for peace and prosperity in the region. He underscored the significance of closer ties in fostering economic relationships and enhancing trade opportunities.

During his visit to the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal, President Raisi expressed a “sense of familiarity” in Pakistan. He received a guard of honor upon arrival, underscoring the respect and warmth extended during his stay. The Iranian president’s visit also included a briefing, further solidifying the bonds between the two neighboring nations.
