ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court has suspended two-day physical remand of journalist Matiullah Jan.
A anti-terrorism court in Islamabad on Thursday had handed over Matiullah Jan to police on two-day physical remand.
Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Arbab Muhammad heard the Matiullah Jan plea submitted by his lawyer Imaan Mazari.
After hearing the plea, the court suspended Matiullah Jan physical remand and remarked that he will now be considered in judicial custody.
Later, the court adjourned the hearing of Matiullah Jan’s case until Monday.
Earlier, Advocate Imaan Mazari had filed a petition against the physical remand of journalist Matiullah Jan.
Imaan Mazari, in her petition, said that Matiullah Jan has been arrested in a false and fabricated case.
She requested the court to hear her plea today. She said that her petition will become ineffective if not heard today.
The Islamabad High Court Bar Association has termed the FIR filed against Matiullah Jan a ridiculous and false and demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter.
The Islamabad High Court Bar Association stated that the arrest of journalist Matiullah Jan is an attack on freedom of the press. Th bar demand that a judicial inquiry be conducted into the matter. The case should be dismissed immediately and Matiullah Jan should be released.
Yesterday, a case was registered against senior journalist and anchor Matiullah Jan at the Margalla police station in Islamabad.
According to the text of the FIR, the police had arrested Matiullah Jan from the E-9 check post, and the police had signaled the vehicle to stop at the checkpoint last night.
The case states that instead of stopping the car, Matiullah Jan rammed into the police, injuring the constable Mudassar on duty.
He was taken into custody on charges of drug possession, snatching weapons from a policeman, and pointing weapons at policemen in an attempt to kill them, read the FIR.
