KARACHI: The New Year’s Eve celebrations in Karachi turned tragic as celebratory gunfire injured at least 15 people in various parts of the city, police and hospital sources confirmed.

Despite repeated warnings from authorities against aerial firing, the practice marred the festivities, leaving several injured in areas including Lyari, Korangi, and North Nazimabad. Hospitals in the city reported a surge of emergency cases within hours of the clock striking midnight, with injuries ranging from minor abrasions to serious gunshot wounds.

According to law enforcement officials, several individuals have been detained in connection with the incidents, and unlicensed weapons have been confiscated during ongoing raids. Authorities reiterated their commitment to curbing such dangerous practices and urged citizens to report any illegal activity.

The victims, including women and children, are currently receiving medical treatment at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and other major hospitals in the city. Hospital administration assured that most of the injured are in stable condition.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh expressed concern over the incidents, ordering an inquiry into the lapses in enforcement and urging stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

This incident has reignited the debate on the need for stronger legal deterrents and public awareness campaigns to discourage reckless behavior during festive occasions.
