In a fiery statement, Khawaja Saad Rafique criticised Richard Grenell, the US President’s special envoy, accusing him of selective morality and political manipulation. Rafique’s remarks, shared in a tweet, targeted Grenell’s sudden interest in Pakistan’s political landscape and questioned the motives behind his recent statements.
“The sleeping conscience of the US President’s special envoy, Mr Richard Grenell, has suddenly awakened,” Rafique began, before delving into a critique of alleged interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs.
He accused Grenell of ignoring critical events such as the alleged “overthrow” of the elected government of Nawaz Sharif in 2018. Rafique attributed this political upheaval to a collusion between Pakistan’s establishment, judiciary, and former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, which he claimed ushered in a period of political revenge and imprisonment of opposition leaders.
The senior politician went on to highlight what he described as a “dead conscience” on Grenell’s part regarding global issues, specifically the “genocide of Palestinians” and the role of “usurper and aggressive Zionists.” According to Rafique, Grenell’s focus is driven by “imperial ambitions” rather than concerns for “humanity, justice, democracy, and the rule of law.”
Rafique further accused the US envoy of attempting to pressure Pakistan to “break the China bloc and surround Iran,” referencing perceived geopolitical manoeuvring aimed at destabilising regional alliances. He concluded his statement with a message of resilience, stating that despite external efforts to undermine Pakistan, “the Lord of the Universe has kept us safe and strong. May Allah be with us.”
