LAHORE: A first information report has been registered to investigate “social media disinformation” on the alleged rape of a student at a private college in Lahore.

The FIR, registered at a Defence police station, stated that the alleged victim as well as her parents denied the incident and that the student was injured after she fell face-first in her house on October 2.

The patient received medical treatment at Ittefaq and General Hospitals till October 11, according to the FIR. Since then, “she has been on bed rest at home”.

The girl’s parents expressed strong reservations over the reports of alleged rape on social media, the FIR stated, adding that the incident was a “well thought-out conspiracy” to mislead students and the general public against government institutions.

The development comes following the results of a report by an inquiry committee, formed by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, which found “no evidence” of rape. The committee blamed social media misinformation for inciting violent protests.

A senior government official said the committee, headed by the provincial chief secretary, summoned and recorded the statements of police officials, the college principal, the Punjab Group of Colleges director, around 28 students and the security guard who was arrested by police as a prime suspect on Monday.

The Punjab government had previously suspended the registration of said college campus over reports of alleged rape within the college premises.
