MANDI BAHAUDDIN: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested a suspect involved in the human trafficking of people who died in a recent Greek boat tragedy.

On the night of December 11-12, boats carrying scores of migrants including Pakistanis illegally from Libya to Greece capsized off the southern Greek island of Gavdos.

In a statement on Tuesday, Pakistani’s Ambassador to Greece Aamar Aftab Qureshi said that more than 80 Pakistanis, including minors, were aboard the unfortunate vessels that capsized on Saturday. He further said 47 Pakistani nationals were rescued from three of the five boats, adding that out of the total rescued, one citizen named Imran was hospitalised.

According to the details, the alleged human trafficker, Muhammad Hassan has been detained from Phalia Tehsil of Mandi Bahauddin district after FIA launched cracked down against the human trafficking cell on the special instruction of Interior Minister Mohsin Nzqviccident.

FIR sources said that the accused had received Rs2.5 million from Haji Ahmed, who died in the Greek accident. The agency has registered a case against the arrest suspect. 

Earlier on Tuesday, the FIA Gujranwala circle registered a case against four alleged human traffickers and reportedly detained two suspects from Sialkot and Gujrat.

The FIR — registered on the complaint after the parents’ refusal — claimed that the parents of Sufyan, a resident of Pasrur, paid Rs2.4 million to a network of agents to take the deceased from Sialkot to Europe via Egypt and Libya. 

Furthermore, FIA officials have been directed to become complainants in the cases of victims from Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin, as two victims belonged to Sialkot and two hailed from Gujrat and Mandi Bahauddin.
