ISLAMABAD: In a significant move aimed at bolstering national security, the Federal Government on Monday empowered officers of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to intercept and trace calls. This authorisation comes under Section 54 of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organisation) Act, 1996.

According to an official notification, the government has granted ISI officers, not below the rank of grade 18, the authority to intercept calls and messages and trace calls through any telecommunication system. The step is taken in the interest of national security and in anticipation of preventing any potential offences.
