PUNJAB: All public and private educational institutions, including universities, colleges, and schools in Lahore and Multan, will remain closed until November 24 due to the prevailing severe smog conditions.

Punjab has put in place emergency measures to tackle the escalating smog crisis, with strict restrictions across several cities set to last until November 24. This announcement was made by Imran Hamid Sheikh, the Director General of Environment for Punjab.

  • Ban on Outdoor Events: Sporting events, exhibitions, and festivals in Lahore are completely banned until November 24.
  • Funeral Exemptions: There will be no restrictions on funeral prayers.
  • Construction Suspension: All construction activities in Lahore and Multan are halted until November 24.
  • Fuel and Kiln Restrictions: The use of furnace oil and brick kilns is prohibited until November 24.
  • Fireworks Prohibition: Fireworks in Lahore are banned until January 31.
  • Office Capacity Limits: Private and government offices in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala must operate at 50 per cent staff capacity, a measure that will remain in effect until January 31.
  • Dining Regulations: Outdoor dining in Lahore and Multan is allowed only until 4pm, while takeaway services can continue until 8pm.
  • Traffic Restrictions: High-emission vehicles are not allowed to enter Lahore and Multan until November 24.
  • Market Closing Times: All markets, shops, and malls must close by 8pm throughout Lahore.

Moreover, public access to parks and educational institutions in 16 other districts of Punjab is restricted until November 24. However, Murree is exempt from these regulations, according to an official circular.

The provincial government is urging citizens to follow these guidelines to help alleviate the environmental crisis and protect public health.
