ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has reached New York to participate in a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on “Implementing Multilateralism: Reforms and Improving Global Governance”.
He was received by Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, at the airport.
The UNSC high-level meeting on ‘Implementing Multilateralism: Reforms and Improving Global Governance’ will be held on February 18.
China, holding the council’s rotating presidency for February, will lead the session. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair the meeting. The discussions come amid rising concerns about multilateralism, especially after Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
During his previous term, Trump withdrew the US from key international agreements. He challenged traditional alliances and favored a unilateral foreign policy. World leaders are closely watching his new administration’s stance on global governance.
Last week, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan confirmed Dar’s visit saying he will also meet foreign ministers and senior UN officials on the sidelines.
Pakistan’s top leaders usually attend the UN General Assembly session every September. However, visits to other UN meetings are less common.
Pakistan won a non-permanent UNSC seat for 2025-2026 in June 2024. It secured 182 out of 193 votes. The country began its two-year term on January 1, 2025.
